E3 2012: Has it lost the magic or should we wait for next year’s version to see something new? – Part 1
Monday, June 11th, 2012 5:13:53 by Usman KhalidIf you ask anyone who has attended a Electronic Entertainment Expo regularly in the last one decade, he would definitely say that the event has lost its oomph. E3, once known for its innovative software and hardware showcased by a number of companies, has lost what it had about five or six years ago.
Though all companies involved in the electronic gaming industry is working hard to launch new games and consoles in the market, most of them are towing the same line as previous year’s, in terms of genre, game-play or even the stories.
The E3 2012 was not an exception to the premise stated above. The event gave a monotonous tone with every player showing the same things over and over again. More than half, or well over half, of the games launched at the event were either sequels to the previous ones or were related to another game like a brother went on war with the evil in another time.
Everything that was launched at the event had an expected response except Xbox SmartGlass or PlayStation Mobile but more on that later.
Halo 4 got a big applause on its release but, again, that was something everybody had coming to them. The game has some new characters and more detailed graphics but what is the point of it if most of the things in it have already been played. Now I am not talking about the game story but the way Halo series goes.
Nintendo’s presentations was less than satisfactory but that was expected. Unsurprisingly, the company again failed to incite or entice gamers to go the length and purchase the new Wii U, so-called revamped console from the Japanese company.
There were a number of games from Nintendo that made their way to the stage but they will not be able to force the users to buy the new console or even replace it with the older Wii. The most important games were New Super Mario U that precedes New Super Mario 2 from last year. As far as the presentation goes, there was not much difference in game-play of the two.
