Google Maps get offline support for Android
Tuesday, June 12th, 2012 9:34:04 by Farasat AliThe next time you go by subway or car passing through a tunnel, Google maps will not disappear from your mobile phone, as long as you have a smartphone with Android platform.
The search engine giant has announced that their service Google Maps will be available for consultation without an Internet connection in 100 countries.
This is one of the main novelties introduced by Google from San Francisco; California City also launches the service Google Earth in three dimensions (3D) for phones with Android 2.0 and above.
Google Earth offers 3D buildings since 2006, but now tries to cover entire metropolitan areas, first in the U.S. and gradually the rest of the world. Their ultimate goal is to cover areas with a total population of 300 million
people by the end of the year.
"We will continue to make Google Maps available as widely as possible.” The project manager and vice president of engineering for Google Maps, Brian McClendon, was quoted as saying.
"Combination of new techniques of imaging and computer vision allows us to automatically create 3D cityscapes, buildings, landscapes dumps and images based on air.” He went on
The owners of the iPhone (Apple), in which runs the IOS operating system must wait a little longer, although the company claims that both services will arrive in near future.
“That does not start a new war between the two tech giants for digital mapping in mobility. The newspaper The Wall Street Journal claimed on Tuesday that Apple has decided to leave Google Maps, which was introduced in the iPhone
back in 2007.
The decision, meanwhile, is expected to be announced in the upcoming iPhone developer’s manufacturer meeting, which takes place next week in San Francisco.
