Unites States not willing to apologize but Pakistan should “bite the bullet” in NATO supply brawl: US officials

According to the United States verdict on Monday, where it briefed on withdrawing its negotiators from Pakistan after failing to seal a deal on the supply routes.

After an unsuccessful meeting with the Pakistani officials, senior US Government personnel briefed today that Pakistan Civilian Government should “bite the bullet” and re-open the supply routes in Afghanistan.

“If the civilian government in Islamabad would bite the bullet and make the political decision to open the ground lines of communication, that would deflect some of the negativity right now,” the official briefed to Reuters.

“It wouldn’t automatically turn things around but that would be an important step.”

The US officials also noted that opening the supply routes will help in decreasing tension between the two nations.

“We have longer-term interests that we must keep in mind. The interests are nuclear, it is counterterrorism and it is also reconciliation in Afghanistan for a relatively peaceful and stable region,” said the US official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

“So you know, the heightened sentiments in Washington will eventually have to come to a point where people say hold on, we have bigger interests here.”

NATO  Supply vehicles were banned by Pakistan as a protest to NATO air attack that killed as many as 24 Pakistani soldiers.

Pakistan banned trucks from carrying supplies to the war effort in Afghanistan last year in protest against a cross-border NATO air attack that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, a measure US officials initially hoped would be short term.

However, Pakistan is firm on its decision and is not willing to re-open the path, “Unless the US offers something that resembles an apology, it is very difficult for Pakistan to reopen Nato supplies” said an official.

“We want to have a package deal and the issue of apology is still included … there will be no compromise on it,” he concluded
