Contempt of Court: Supreme Court Hands over show cause notice to Malik Riaz

Islamabad: (Wednesday, June 13, 2012) The Supreme Court, declaring the real estate tycoon Riaz Malik’s press conference as contempt of court, has issued a show cause notice to him and has summoned him on Thursday.

During proceedings today, the bench hearing the case remarked the news conference as an attempt to malign and undermine the authority of the apex court.

Commenting on Riaz’s press conference following his appearance in the court, Justice Shakirullah Jan remarked that Riaz was trying to ridicule and spread hatred against the Supreme Court.

Taking suo moto notice of Riaz Malik’s press conference on Registrar Supreme Court’s request, the court has constituted a three-member bench to hear the case.

Filed by Advocate Ashraf Gujjar, another contempt of court petition relating to the same news conference was also heard by the same three-member bench.

Yesterday, Malik Riaz convened a fiery news conference with regard to the ongoing Arsalan Iftikhar case. During this press conference, Riaz asked the chief Justice to reveal details of his meetings with the real estate tycoon and
about how long he had been aware of Iftikhar Arsalan’s wrong doings.

Riaz had further said that he was not scared of being called for contempt or sent to prison.

When approached to comment on Malik Riaz’s press conference, his counsel Zahid Bukhari distanced himself from the event and said that he had nothing to do with that as it was Riaz’s personal complain.
