Indonesia Open: Sony Dwi Kuncoro tames Brice Leverdez to surge into main round

Indonesia’s talented player Sony Dwi Kuncoro cheered his home fans by easing into Men’s Singles main round after taming Brice Leverdez of France in Indonesia Open Premier Super Series 2012 on Tuesday, June 12, in Jakarta.

The in-form Kuncoro, who is World Number 65 in Men’s Singles rankings, showed his aggression and toppled his World Number 36 rival Leverdez who was second seeded player in qualifying round draw of the tournament.

Kuncoro, who grabbed Men’s Singles title in last week’s Thailand Open, put up tremendous show and hammered his opponent in straight games with a respectable margin on the board.

The confused Leverdez, on the other hand, tried to play dominating badminton but failed to overpower his in-form Indonesian opponent and lost to him in front of the roaring Indonesian crowd that was supporting the local hero.

Both shuttlers played aggressive badminton in the opening set of this qualifying round battle and also remained positive in the court. They executed safe strokes in order to avoid unforced mistakes.

It was the Indonesian who took a two-point lead of 11-9 on the score board until the one-minute interval in this game.

After the break, Kuncoro injected more power into his shots and started to stretch the lead on the score board without facing tough resistance from his French opponent.

Indonesian shuttler remained positive and did not lose his focus in the entire game and eventually got advantage by taking the set with a margin of 21-18.

In the following set, Leverdez showed his brilliance when he played to his maximum potential and managed to take a small lead until the mid-game break.

After the break, the higher ranked French shuttler extended the gap on the board and reached at 17-13 when Kuncoro geared up his speed and caught up his rival at 17-17.

Kuncoro remained dominant in the ending points and remained successful in winning the second game with a narrow 21-19 margin on the board.

The in-form Kuncoro won this last qualifying round battle in 42 minutes against Leverdez with a sensational difference of 21-18 and 21-19.
