Bilateral ties vital for US and Pakistan: Hina Rabbani Khar

Urging the United States to consider significance of bilateral ties, Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar said the bilateral ties between the two allies were very significant and both couldn’t afford to ignore the reality.

While speaking to a US Congressional delegation, she noted, “Both sides have shared goals of peace and prosperity in the region and called for working together to strengthen the relationship based on mutual trust and mutual respect”.

The delegation was headed by Representative Todd Platts, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee while Representative Stephen Lynch, Representative Glenn Thompson, Representative Tom Marino and Representative John Fleming were also part of the delegating body.

Earlier, the delegation was briefed on the present state of affairs and challenges of Pakistan-US ties.

The minister conveyed to the US Parliamentarians the sense of the Parliament regarding the Salala incident and its recommendations for re-engagement with the American administration. In the meeting, she informed the delegation about the region situation.

The delegation expressed its consequent on the need to overcome the current stress and work for building a holistic relationship taking into account shared interests. The participants also agreed that steps should be taken to boost public confidence on both sides.

Earlier, the minister while speaking to the British Foreign Secretary William Hague said that both the US and were holding talks over the resumption of NATO supplies.

She further stated that the two countries have moved for a new agreement and technical affairs have been discussed, but any decision would be taken in light of resolution of parliament.

A couple of days ago, the United States Monday it was withdrawing its team of negotiators from Pakistan without securing a long-sought deal on supply routes for the war in neighboring Afghanistan, publicly exposing a diplomatic stalemate and deeply strained relations that appear at risk of deteriorating further.
