Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan urged the need for good governance by depoliticization of state institutions, particularly bureaucracy and police, extending his support to giving power at the grassroots level.

A statement issued by the party after his meeting with British Foreign Secretary William Hague in Islamabad in which the two leaders discussed expanding relationships between the two countries.

The cricket-turned-politician was of the opinion that the aid should be given directly to social and educational projects instead of government to generally for fiscal budgetary support. He, however, commended DFID aid particularly in the education sector.

Imran Khan once again reiterated an emergency should be declared in the education sector. He asserted that the country would progress with an enabling environment to encourage the vibrant civil society and overseas Pakistanis if governance was reestablished.

The former captain also discussed war on terror with British foreign secretary, saying that it was an adequate time to give peace a chance through dialogue with the tribal people.

William Hague in the meeting said, “There was recognition that there has to be reconciliation in Afghanistan, even amongst the Americans. But there are some elements like al Qaeda who are not reconcilable”.

Upon which, Imran Khan explained the nature of bilateral ties between Pakistan and the United States and why an apology for Salala incident was critical. He also stated that the present US policy of drones was absurd and pointless.

The former cricketer said that the war against terrorism could be concluded within three months through negotiations.

“It was high time to give peace a chance through dialogue with the tribal people and added that every military operation by Pakistan army against its own people had ended in failure. We can help Americans in their withdrawal from their mess in this region”, he asserted.

The former star cricketer clarified that his party had always advocated a political solution to the problem of terrorism and militancy, adding that his first move would be to have a ceasefire and convince the US that a credible government in Pakistan could stop the militancy in the tribal areas.
