Supreme Court issues show-cause notice to Malik Riaz

A special bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan has issued a show-cause notice to Malik Riaz, the property tycoon, as he put up allegations against the Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

The bench comprising Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan, Justice Tariq Parvez and Justice Amir Hani Muslim summoned Malik Riaz to appear on Thursday to explain what he had said in the media interaction.

The move is seen by many legal observers as an attempt on the part of the judiciary to counter the campaign which has put the institution of the Supreme Court in an awkward position, especially after allegations of financial wrongdoings by Dr Arsalan Iftikhar,
son of the chief justice.

Malik Riaz has made the following allegations publically, “Arsalan had approached my business partner Ahmed Khalil and later he was in contact with my son-in-law. My son-in-law used to pay him the amounts he demanded to settle the cases but it was never
done and I was frustrated and had to come up with all these evidences.”

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry started proceedings against his own son, Arsalan Ifthikhar, yesterday as he has been accused of receiving a bribe worth Rs 400 million by the real estate tycoon for the purpose
of having sway over some cases in the apex court of the country.

Before the hearing, Iftikhar told reporters he was innocent and that the Chief Justice had told him not to return home till the matter was settled by the apex court. Despite the fact that Malik Riaz is the key person in the case, he failed to make an appearance
before the Supreme Court yesterday. His aide told the bench that he was in Britain for medical treatment. The tycoon is facing a number of cases in the Supreme Court. These cases were filed by a number of persons who have accused Hussain of grabbing large
chunks of land and merging them into Bahria Town.

Zahid Hussain Bukhari has been making an appearance on behalf of Malik Riaz in front of the Supreme Court.
