Attorney General exchanges harsh words with judges
Thursday, June 14th, 2012 3:50:48 by Faisal FarooqIn what appeared to be a severe violation of code of behavior, Attorney General Irfan Qadir created mess in the Supreme Court, exchanging harsh words with judges, particularly with Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
Apparently, his move was meant to make happy those sitting in the power corridors, setting aside the moral values.
The Attorney General, who is considered top law officer of the government, ridiculed the bench, using abusive remarks and gestures against the judges.
While the three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry kept reminding him of his position, the Attorney General continued to interrupt the proceedings.
However, the situation deteriorated after he used a vulgar gesture that provoked some junior lawyers and they attempted to scuffle with him. However, the security was called in to control the situation while senior lawyers also interrupted and cooled the tempers.
According to the reports, the Attorney General expressed his annoyance against the judges for their ruling against Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani in the contempt of court case.
The bench has taken up Hamid Khan’s plea against the ruling of Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza if favor of the premier.
The Supreme Court issued notices to the premier, Attorney General Irfan Qadir, National Assembly Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the Federation.
Later, the bench rejected the plea filed by Attorney General to review the June 06 verdict. Despite clears orders from the apex court, the premier, National Assembly Speaker and Federation didn’t file replies to the court.
Irfan Qadir observed, “This is a very serious matter and we cannot respond in vacuum and the bench should first review its order”. Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry refused to do so.
A K Dogar, the counsel for Azhar Chaudhry, argued that the prime minister was disqualified because of the application of Article 63 (1) (g) of the Constitution.
In his view, under the above mentioned article the role of the Speaker Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) regarding disqualification of a member has ended.
Hamid Khan, counsel for PTI Chairman Imran Khan, contended that the NA speaker’s ruling was without jurisdiction and unlawful.
He noted, “The sentencing of PM Gilani stands final as no appeal was filed against the conviction”.
