Government to stay neutral in Riaz Malik-Arsalan Iftikhar saga

After the opposition parties came out in support of the chief justice over the alleged corruption case of Dr. Arsalan Iftikhar, the son of Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, leaders of the ruling coalition decided to stay away from the controversy.

A meeting of the allied parties held with President Asif Ali Zardari in the chair that took stock of the situation and its possible outcomes, deciding to uphold a neutral posture.

An official of the meeting quoting the president observed, “The situation is grave but it is actually a matter between the two people. The best way for us is to keep a neutral posture”.

President Asif Ali Zardari barred coalition partners and party members from issuing statement regarding the recent controversy, saying the country couldn’t afford any confrontation and that his party respects judiciary.

Another leader of the meeting informed the media that some leaders were of the view that by taking up a contempt of court notice against Malik Riaz, the real estate tycoon of the country, the court has become a party in the case. In his view, it was case among two individuals.

Haji Adeel of ANP (Awami National Party) noted, “It is a matter between two individuals and why should we become a party to it.

While answering to a question about allegations that the president had a role in the charges leveled by property tycoon Malik Riaz, he clarified that neither the president nor the prime minister had any link with the case and this had also been stated by Malik Riaz in his press conference.

However, he was of the opinion that the Arsalan-Riaz case would go on for some time and would have multiple dimensions

The meeting according to the participants also discussed matters related to next general elections, the law and order situation in Karachi.

President Asif Ali Zardari also briefed the leaders of coalition parties about his recent interaction with the world leaders, particularly his discussions over the ongoing tensions with the United States.
