Hackers bypass security to steal account information from League of Legends European servers

The personal information of League of Legends users was stolen from various European servers, confirmed Riot Games on Saturday, June 9.

There had been a lot of buzz on the popular real-time strategy game’s forums about the account information of players being stolen from the EU West and EU Nordic & East databases.

The founders of Riot Games Marc Merrill and Brandon Beck confirmed the rumours as true, stating in a blog post that hackers indeed had gotten access to the databases and gotten hold of the names, e-mail address, date of births, encrypted passwords, security questions and their answers.

“Hackers gained access to certain personal player data contained in certain EU West and EU Nordic & East databases,” wrote Merrill and Beck in their blog post.

The developer revealed that it had more than 32 million registered accounts on its three League of Legend servers, which includes both the North American and European servers. However, the hackers only breached and stole information from the European servers, while the North American servers remained uncompromised.

The developer further went on to add that the credit card and payment information remained safe from the hackers.

Riot Games contended that it has successfully identified the security issue that was exploited by the hackers and resolved it to ensure that such a breach does not happen in the future. It also issued an apology to the account users.

The affected accounts have already been sent an e-mail by Riot Games, making them aware of the issue. The developer has also advised its users to change their passwords while informing them that the account recovery process will not be utilising the security questions any longer.

“We take your privacy and security seriously, and we're working diligently to improve it for the better,” stated Riot Games.

Based on the widely acclaimed Warcraft III map Defence of the Ancients (DotA), League of Legends is an action real-time strategy video game developed for PC. The game took the services of former DotA developer Steve “Guinsoo” Freak as well. The game released its beat version on April 10, 2009, before releasing the complete version in October later in the year.
