Icann unleashes another hoard of top level domains, Google spends $18.7 Million in shopping – Part 1
Friday, June 15th, 2012 4:18:00 by Usman KhalidDomain naming tycoon Icann recently announced that it will be unleashing some new top-domain names in 2013, however, the bidding for them domains has already started and Google is ahead of everybody else.
Google is allegedly spending $18.7 Million to secure around 100 of domain names that range from .google, .youtube and .goog.
It seems that the domain naming market leader is not generating enough money from the TLDs like .com and .net, therefore, they have created a ripple in the market with a slew of possibly every name in the world with a ‘dot’. Surprisingly, Facebook has not bid on a single domain including .facebook.
“Facebook did not apply for .facebook or any other new top level domains,” says spokesperson Andrew Noyes.
Moreover, Apple also seems least interest in the hype created by Icann. They have only applied for .apple. The Cupertino giants did not even bid on .app TLD, a slang created by the company in the first place. They are keeping their excessive cash to the minimal at spending on childish hoaxes like this.
As for Facebook, the company’s lack of interest in this new stunt might have some reasons in the backdrop. The company is still in the trance of the post-IPO torrent that took the company’s share price below the face value. Moreover, the social network has other things to do besides purchasing .facebook and .likeit. It now has investors to please and they will be quite .mad if the company produce considerable profits in the coming months.
