Washington: In order to revive the stalled peace talks between Palestine and Israel, the chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat will visit USA and meet US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton next week.
Disclosing details of the news, the US state department’s spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said, “Clinton had already met with Israeli negotiator Yitzhak Molho and she will see Erakat next week.”
Trying to play the due role in making the two sides sit together on the table and to start settling their disputes through negotiations, the top US diplomat had also talked to the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu two days
ago. The diplomat had also held a separate meeting with the Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas.
Sharing her views, Nuland said further, “All of this is further to encouraging them to build on the exchange of letters and continue to take the next step toward the table.”
“We are trying to improve the atmosphere so that we can make progress and get them back to the table” she added further.
While comprehensive and direct peace dialogues between the two countries remain frozen, top officials on both sides have been engaged into talks on a range of issues, including an exchange of letters between Netanyahu and Abbas.
Envoys from the Middle East quartet met in Brussels on Friday to discuss the calls from the Palestinians to step up their action to put the continuing Israeli settlement activity on halt.
Commenting on what other nations were doing in this regards, Catherine Ashton, a spokesman for EU foreign policy chief, said, “Officials from the United States, United Nations, European Union and Russia gathered to discuss and
consult as they routinely do over the phone as well.”
