Karachi: (Monday, June 18, 2012) High level officials from Pakistan and India have gathered in New Delhi to start peace negotiations over the disputed maritime border region of Sir Creek.
The two-day event, being hosted in the Indian capital, is being attended by the defense ministry officials from the two sides of the border.
Rear Admiral Farrukh Ahmed is leading Pakistani delegation to the event, while the Indian side is being led by the Surveyor General of India S. Subba Rao.
Sir Creek, a 96-km long strip of water, opens up into the Arabian Sea dividing the Kutch region of the Indian state of Gujarat and the Sindh Province of Pakistan. This strip is a disputed part between the arch rivaling neighbours.
Perhaps this is the reason that this disputed boundary has long been a bone of contention between the nuclear capable neighbors.
Last week, Pakistan and India also started talks on another disputed boundary – the Siachen Glacier, which is known to be the world’s highest battlefield. The talks had ended without conclusion.
The two countries had resumed talks to settle these long standing issues only last year, which had fallen apart in November 2008 when 166 people in Mumbai were killed by gunmen allegedly from Pakistan.
