FIA to investigate Riaz Malik-Arsalan Iftikhar case
Tuesday, June 19th, 2012 3:04:11 by Faisal FarooqAs per directives of the Supreme Court, Attorney General of Pakistan Irfan Qadir has formed a three-member Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to investigate the alleged payments made by real estate tycoon Malik Riaz to Arsalan Iftikhar, the son of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
According to the media reports, the JIT consists of the Inspector General of Islamabad Police, as well as directors from the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
The report published in Express Tribune quoting sources said that Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) government finalized the names of the investigative panel and dispatched the details to office of the AGP.
Irfan Qadir, will issue the notification that can be come in the next 24 hours and he himself will supervise the probe committee and later will submit a report to the apex court.
Property tycoon and former chairman Bahria Town Malik Riaz had accused Dr Arsalan of financial impropriety, saying that he had taken bribes from him and promised to have his cases pending in court settled cordially.
A two-judge bench of the Supreme Court on June 14 had directed Irfan Qadir to proceed according to the law and take necessary measures against business tycoon Malik Riaz, his son-in-law Salman and the chief justice’s son Dr Arsalan Iftikhar.
The investigative team was mandated to investigate many persons including the wife of the chief justice, his son Dr Arsalan Iftikhar, his mentor Hakeem Abdul Wahab, Malik Riaz and his son-in-law Salman Ali Khan.
It will also probe businessman Ahmad Khalil, alleged to be the go-between, and renowned lawyer Hamid Khan. According to the reports, Hakim Wahab is suspected to be a partner of Dr Arsalan.
The two cases for which the bribes were given primarily would be probed in close detail while the panel will also check the authenticity of allegations leveled by Malik Riaz.
One case was pertaining to the car-race while the second case was about the murder of Bahria Town guard Fayyaz Ahmed.
Irfan Qadir, the attorney general, while speaking to the media confirmed the formation of Joint Investigation Team, promising that everything would be disclosed after the probe.
