Microsoft finally launches Windows-based tablets catering to both iPad- and Amazon-dominated segments – Part 1
Tuesday, June 19th, 2012 4:38:16 by Usman KhalidThe new tablet culture has started to find its feet in the ultra-competitive market. To date, there were only two companies that ran the show, Apple and Google, with their respective iOS and Android operating systems. However, now there is another player in the arena, surely, to give these giants a run for their money.
Microsoft launched the new line of tablets named Surface in Monday that will run on different versions of Windows, more specifically Windows 8. The tablets are divided into two basic categories, the base denomination will run on Windows RT, the tuned down version of the Win8. The upper bracket will have the full-fledged Windows 8.
The basic segregation of the line of tablets is mainly due to the different modes of use the current market boasts. There are Kindles and Nooks in the market for basic services as book reading and web browsing. And then there is a more rigorous and high-end market segment that seeks the tablet to be a laptop replacement or a portable gaming console.
The need of both segments boils down to the price of the commodities. Amazon released Kindle Fire last year to address to the segment that needs an amalgam of e-reader and a movie screen, and nothing more nothing less. Barnes and Noble also cater to the same market.
However, there is another market that needs more than an e-reader. This is where the pioneers, Apple to state obvious, come in. Though Apple is not alone in this business now, the likes of Asus with Transformer line of tablets and Toshiba with its Excite has probed into the market.
The upper category asks for some valour in the tablets and that only comes at a price. There are a number of tablets in the market that offer faster processors and high-end graphics for rigorous gaming. However, that market is only limited to two major players, iOS and Android.
Not anymore.
