Communication and Social Accountability Training held for Public School Teachers

ISLAMABAD: (20 June 2012) Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) held a training workshop for public school teachers on “Interpersonal Communication and Teaching Skills and Social Accountability in Education”  here on
Wednesday. The training was aimed at introducing social accountability tools to public schools teachers and equip them with necessary communication skills to enhance their quality of interaction with students.

The training was organized to address serious gaps identified in a study and survey of Citizen Report Cards (CRCs) on education recently carried out by Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) in two of the slums in Islamabad
including Alipur Farash and Hansa Colony. The findings of the CRC survey highlighted gaps such as obsolete teaching methods and communication gap between the students, parents and teachers.

Ahmad Salim Khwaja, Senior Advisor, SDPI called Pakistani class rooms as control rooms and urged on the need of introducing interactive mode of teaching where teacher and students can freely interact in a congenial learning environment.

Shanaz Tareen, Former ADO, Education Department KPK was of the view that teaching and preaching are similar and urged the teachers to educate students like prophets. She said, a child can only become productive member of society
when he has the spiritual, physical and mental development through a quality education.

Fayyaz  Yasin of SDPI briefed participants on concept of social accountability and Citizen Report Cards (CRC). He said Citizen Report Cards (CRCs) are participatory surveys that seek user feedback on the performance of public services
such as education.  He said CRC build accountability through civic engagement and can provide solution in majority of problems.

Rao Nadeem, Professor Quaid-e-Azam University deliberated that teachers cannot earn respect unless they treat students with love and affection. He said, teachers must communicate and channelize information in such a way that children’s
can easily understand and grasp the knowledge.
