Dwayne Bravo criticises umpires over Chris Gayle decision
Wednesday, June 20th, 2012 1:15:07 by Rana Nasir GhafoorWest Indian all-rounder Dwayne Bravo slammed match-officials for making a controversial LBW decision against Chris Gayle in the second One Day International against England at the Oval.
After an exile of more than a year, Gayle was playing his first match and batted wonderfully in the opening ten overs. He had made quick 53 and was looking solid, when the New Zealand umpire Tony Hill declared him out on Graeme Swann’s shout.
Gayle was so confident that he quickly challenged the decision, but things did not change for him. After a long study, the third umpire upheld the decision, despite the fact that it was a very close call.
Gayle was seriously disappointed, because he felt the ball hit his bat before touching the pads. It was a huge setback for the visiting side, as the aggressive opener was looking great.
Kieron Pollard and Bravo did a fantastic job to take their side to 238 runs, but it never looked being enough, as Alastair Cook led his side to an easy win by scoring a magnificent ton.
Risking a disciplinary action, Bravo criticised the officials, saying that had Gayle not been given out, West Indies would have been in far better position.
“What confused us is they used the technology, and then the decision was given. It’s okay, umpires do make mistakes — that’s accepted — but not when they see the referral as well and realise they’ve made the wrong decision and then stand by it," Bravo
said after the match.
"It was a game-changing moment, and it was always difficult then to get a big total. If the decision had gone a different way, it might have been a different ball game. We lost our way in the middle there. Pollard and I fought our way back, but we were not
in a position to have the firepower to finish off the innings," he added.
On the other hand, Gayle was happy to start playing international cricket after a long break. Meanwhile, the belligerent opener shared that he is available for all three formats of the game.
"It’s not too bad, it’s just age catching up on Chris Gayle," he said. "I just have to monitor it. As you know, I’m struggling with basically a stress fracture. It’s good to be back to be honest," the left-hander described.
