PPP looks to senior leader Makhdoom Shahabuddin to fill the void

In light of yesterday’s events in which the Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousuf Raza Gilani was ruled to be ineligible by the Supreme Court of the country to hold office and thus relieved from the post, the government of Pakistan ruled by the Pakistan People’s
party now has nominated senior leader Makhdoom Shahabuddin to fill the void.

The decision was made at a meeting of senior PPP leaders chaired early this morning by President Asif Ali Zardari, Geo News channel quoted its sources as saying. The meeting further decided to convene a session of the National Assembly or lower house of
parliament on Thursday to formally elect the new leader of the House, the report said.

There was no official word on the development from the PPP or the presidency. The move came in the wake of two separate meetings of the PPP’s central executive committee and the leaders of the ruling coalition led by the PPP.

A government official made the following comment on the matter, “If all the coalition parties agree on a name, then the PPP is expected to announce the name for new prime minister on Wednesday.”

The Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousuf Raza Gilani was asked by the Supreme Court of Pakistan to write to the Swiss probe in order to re start an investigation in which the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari was named for being involved in a money laundering
case along with his deceased wife Benazir Bhutto. However, the Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousuf Raza Gilani did not comply with the orders of the Supreme Court stating that the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari enjoyed complete immunity both within and
outside the country.

The case which the Supreme Court of Pakistan has been urging the government of the country ruled by the Pakistan People’s Party to re start came to a stop by the signing of the National Reconciliation Ordinance during the time that the President of the country
was Gen. (retd) Pervez Musharraf. However, the apex court of the country had deemed the NRO as illegal which in effect called for the re starting of the investigation.
