ANF issues arrest warrants for Makhdoom Shahabuddin
Thursday, June 21st, 2012 2:36:51 by Faisal FarooqIn what appeared to be another blow for the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP), Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) issued a non-bailable arrest warrant for nominee of the prime minister’s post, Makhdoom Shahabuddin for his alleged involvement in the drug quota case.
Judge Shafqatullah Khan acting on a request from the Anti-Narcotics Force issued arrest warrants for Makhdoom Shahabuddin and Member National Assembly (MNA) Ali Musa Gilani, the son of Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani.
The magistrate also directed officials to arrest and present them in his court within a week.
ANF Commander Brigadier Faheem and Investigating Officer (IO) Abid Zulfiqar during the hearing presented a report in the court.
They claimed that they had evidence and witness testimonies proving the direct involvement of former health minister Shahabuddin and Ali Musa Gilani in providing illegal quota of banned chemicals to a laboratory in Multan.
In his statement to the investigation team, former director general (DG) Health Dr Rasheed Jumma verified that it was Shahabuddin who approved the 2500 KG ephedrine quota allotment to Berlex Lab International and 6500 Kg to Danas Pharma.
The ex-DG further said that Ali Musa Gilani pressurized him for the allotment of the quota as well. Approving the request of Brig Faheem and IO Abid, the judge issued non-bailable warrants for the arrest of two high-profile personalities.
Makhdoom Shahabuddin, a Pakistan People’s Party leader, has been nominated by President Asif Ali Zardari for premiership. He is scheduled to submit his nomination papers today.
While speaking to the media, the candidate for the premiership said that there was no allegation against him in drug quota case. He made it clear that it was being reported only that the case occurred when he was minister for health.
Shahabuddin moreover said that his biggest enemy would not put any allegation of corruption on him.
Former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, who was disqualified as premier by the Supreme Court on Tuesday, has said his son was framed in a baseless case. He also accused army officials working in the ANF of exceeding their powers in investigating the matter.

What a coincidence – as soon as the PPP file his nomination, there is a warrant for him. And then some have the guts to say the matters are not political.
Why today? if he is going to be the PM then there is no likelihood that he wont appear before court. While previously he was not issued such warrants when the probability of not co-operating was proportionately high. Our judiciary is serving whose interests?
