MacBook Air 13-inch (2012): Full Review – Part 3
Thursday, June 21st, 2012 6:41:35 by Usman KhalidThe keyboard gets a lot of attention. Apple has included the same keyboard with aptly distanced keys but this time they are a little shallow to increase the ergonomics of the device. Even though it has a smaller footprint, the keyboard is comfortable for larger hands to write. The LED backlight adjusts amply to the ambient light.
There is power button on right top corner that in MacBook Pro was dedicated eject discs from optical drives. The track pad in the MacBook Air carries the legacy of its ancestors from the years before. Apple is known for the track pad efficiency and the new Air is no exception to the rule. It is smooth and there are no hiccups in any mode of use.
Though many other ultrabook vendors have copied the size and multi-gesture features but none have been successful in reaching the pinnacle of proficiency Apple has achieved in the last few years. The gestures work smooth mirroring the efficiency of iPads and iPhones.
There is an HD webcam on the top bezel of the screen. It can now record up to 720p video with sheer effectiveness. To date, HD cameras were only a part of iMacs and MacBook Pros. The FaceTime chat now gets a big bump in quality.
Final Take
Though there are a number of hardware upgrades to the new MacBook Air and the price has been shaved off to $1199 but still the new laptop fails to create a ripple in the market. The laptop market has changed in the last one year. At its 2011 launch last summer, it was the best revolutionary super slim laptop out there. Now it sits in the middle of horde of ultrabooks that range from 0.4 inches to 0.8 inches in depth. This does not bode well for a company that started it all in the first place.
However, still the new MacBook Air is the best choice for an entry-level user, with a tuned-down $1199 price tag.
