Friday, June 22nd, 2012 11:26:50 by Faisal FarooqUS Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said it was in the Washington’s interest to keep the cooperative ties with Islamabad.
Her statement came at a time when the bilateral ties between Islamabad and Washington are in a troubled spot.
While interviewing to an American TV channel, the Secretary of State underscored that severing relationships with Pakistan would not be in the United States’ interests.
She noted, “I think that our relationship with Pakistan has been challenging for a long time. Some of it is of our own making. We are living with a country which has a lot of difficult issues both for themselves and then for us and others”.
She gave a suggestion on how to proceed on the difficult relation, saying she was completely agreed that it was not in their interests to cut off their bilateral relations. In her view, it was in their interests to do better direct and mange that relationship and they were insisting Islamabad for do more.
She said that Pakistan will have to do more against safe hideouts inside the country. The key issue that prevented the US from success is that the Taliban cross the border, they get direction and funding and they go back across the boundary line, she added.
The Secretary of State pointed out process how insurgents are able to escape to uncontrolled regions between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Replying to a query, she made it clear that the US does not have proof up till now that someone at the top position in Islamabad have knowledge about the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden, the Al-Qaeda chief killed on May 02, 2011 in garrison town of Abbottabad.
Hilary Clinton further stated that they had never been able to prove that anyone at the superior level knew the presence of top militant.
She remarked, “When I first went to Pakistan as Secretary in 2009 that I found it impossible to believe that somebody in their government didn’t know where he was, and I still believe that. That he took up residence and built this huge compound in a military garrison town”.
Moreover she said they knew there were links between retired members and militants but they had never been able to close that loop.
