Samsung Galaxy SIII (2012): Full Review – Part 4

Hardware

The new SIII comes in two versions, the global model with a quad-core processor and the US iteration with the same efficient dual-core QUALCOMM Snapdragon S4 processor. Much of the deficit is covered with the inclusion of extra 1 GB of RAM, totalling 2 GB for the US version. This is the first time that a 4.8-inch smartphone has a receive more than 1 GB of RAM.

The body, on paper, might be a fallback for those who were expecting ceramic build in the new SIII. However, actual use of the premium plastic body with exquisite contoured and textured finish is utterly satisfying. The plastic helps keep the handset light-weight as well, at 4.7 ounces.

There are two cameras, one 1.9-mega pixel secondary lens on the front side that is 720p HD and the primary 8-mega pixel snapper at the rear with the capability of recording 1080p video with sheer quality. The rear camera is flash-supported as well.

The phone comes in two denominations with respect to storage, 16 GB and 32 GB. It is primarily available in two colours, blue and white, however, a red SIII will be released exclusively by AT&T in the US.

Under the hood are micro-SIM, micro-SD card slots. Up top are two gold antennae for near-field communication. It is available in both HSPA+ and LTE versions, depending on carrier.

WiFI, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC are a standard issue in all SIII versions.

Software

The biggest difference however, is in the operating system and Samsung’s own software features. Though it is not news now that some phone comes with Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system Android, but the inclusion of S-Beam, S-Voice and TouchWiz along with many other applications does create a ripple.
