Imran Khan terms Pervez Ashraf’s election as PM a shame for the country
Saturday, June 23rd, 2012 2:04:11 by Faisal FarooqChairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan said President Asif Ali Zardari has further strengthened his resolve to fight the government out of power by electing Raja Pervez Ashraf as Prime Minister of the country.
Addressing a massive rally in Hyderabad, the gateway to Sindh, Imran observed, “I don’t just have to defeat you alone, Zardari, but the whole political mafia directly or indirectly supporting you in power”.
Urging the people to join hands with him, the cricketer-turned-politician pledged liberation of the people from the feudal system.
He said he came in Sindh to meet the people and garner their support for the change, not the feudal lords whose clout needs to be broken to empower the people.
He further said his party’s envisioned local government system will provide a remedy end feudal culture.
In his view, the elected representatives under this system will not be given the developmental funds. The local bodies will be responsible for developmental works in the country, he added.
Interestingly, the former captain did not touch those issues which traditionally appeal to the province’s electorate, such as water dispute between Punjab and Sindh, control of the province over natural resources and the port, and the national status for Sindh language.
He lamented, “While their coffers swell, the innocent are killed on ethnic basis. The elected representatives only pretend that they are moved by the killings in Karachi”.
He also criticized property tycoon Malik Raiz, accusing him of having greased the palm of the chief justice’s son, Dr Arsalan Iftikhar, simply to get favors but all to no avail. The cricketer stated that he has no value for sale and no one could buy him.
Commenting on the disqualification of former Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani, the PTI chief said he was pleased to see that Supreme Court for the first time in the history of the country took the decision to bring a powerful person under rule.
He said, “Zardari thinks he can whatever he wants, and that is unfortunate. I am determined to defeat Zardari and all mafias pushing the country to the brink of ruin”.
Expressing lamentation, he said the poor people of Karachi were being trodden upon on a daily basis and rulers were paying no attention to the issue.
