Felicitating Raja Pervez Ashraf for becoming 25th Prime Minister of the country, President Asif Ali Zardari has said the people were ultimate judges and they will give verdict sooner or later.

Addressing the oath taking ceremony of the newly elected premier and federal cabinet, the president said that those had been defeated who attempted to detract the democracy.

He noted, “The detractors of democracy have long been hounding the former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani. They thought the coalition will not be able to agree to a new leader of the house, they thought the house would be sent packing and create political uncertainty”.

Commending the parliament, he said the collective wisdom of the National Assembly has proven detractors wrong. He urged the newly elected leader of the house to resolve energy crisis on priority basis, saying it was not the only area of concern.

Apart from energy crisis, there are other problems of great concern including inflation, law and order, unemployment and dwindling economy. He anticipated that the new cabinet under the headship of Raja Pervez Ashraf will make efforts to resolve the problems with determination and commitment.

Commenting the role of Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza for running the session of National Assembly in a sober manner, he said the process of electing new leader of the House concluded in a democratic way.

He also expressed hopes that the newly elected cabinet will help in strengthening democracy, ensure supremacy of the Constitution and devote their energies for betterment of the society.

Asif Ali Zardari at the same offered thanks to allied parties for providing their support in electing Raja Pervez Ashraf prime minister of the country.

The president also commended former premier Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani for all that he did for the people of Pakistan. He remarked, “In doing so he paid a very high personal price. But he stood firmly to protect the democratic principles, the supremacy of parliament and of the Constitution”.

In his view, Gilani has held high the torch lit by their leaders Zulfikaq Ali Bhutto and Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.

Gillani, the former prime minister of the PPP, was dismissed by the Supreme Court over contempt charges for defying its orders to write to Swiss authorities to reopen graft cases against his boss, President Zardari.
