Islamabad: (Monday, June 25, 2012) While hearing the dual nationality case, the Supreme Court of Pakistan here today suspended the senate membership of Zahid Iqbal of Pakistan Peoples’ Party.
In another development, Senator Jamil Malik confessed before the court that he holds Holland’s nationality. However, he said that he is not a citizen of the country. Following his statement, the Chief Justice remarked by asking
“how can a person be a national and not a citizen of Holland.”
Jamil Malik has formally submitted his replay on the dual nationality case in the apex court.
Hearing the case, Justice Jawwad S Khawaja remarked that people having dual nationalities should not be a part of Pakistan’s assemblies.
In order to carry forward the hearing procedure and to investigate about other dual nationality holders members of Parliament, the petitioner Wahid Anjum requested the court to collect records from Airport authorities and FIA.
No one representing Member National Assembly Farhat Mehmeed Khan and MNA Nadia Gabol came to the Supreme Court. However, Rehman Malik was given some more time to submit his documents.
Anwar Mansoor, the counsel of Rehman Malik maintained in the court that Malik’s lawyer in UK is on leave which is why he was unable to present the evidence and documents in the court and asked for more time.
The court granted him the time to gather the evidence and adjourned the hearing until July 2.
