Tesla releases Model S, the first four-door electric saloon with the highest mileage recorded – Part 2
Monday, June 25th, 2012 4:24:16 by Usman KhalidThe mileage depends on the battery size, to state the obvious. The company states that 85 kWh model gives a mileage of 300 miles to full charge. However, after rigorous tests Environment Protection Agency slated the average to 265 miles to full charge of battery.
The 40 kWh battery churns out 160 miles on the tarmac while 60 kWh source offers around 230 miles to full charging. These are, including the 300 miles average on 85 kWh battery, Tesla’s own measurements at an average speed of 55 miles an hour.
The batteries use Panasonic cells with nickel-cobalt-aluminium cathodes that are consolidated into one pack embedded on the car floor, giving the vehicle lowest centre of gravity. This makes the car manoeuvre well in the corners and reach high speeds with brisk acceleration.
With 265 miles to full charge, according to EPA estimates, the Model S becomes the most energy efficient vehicle in the world.
Moreover, the batteries are not solely dedicated to the electric motor up top, it also powers all the electronics inside the cabin from stereo to power steering.
The charging time depends on battery’s leftover charge, power outlet and plug used. With a a 10 kW, NEMA 14-50 240 V/40 A outlet, usually used in recreation vehicles (RV), the battery will restore 31 miles to an hour. With Tesla’s 20 kW, 240 V High Power Wall Connector the charging jumps up to 62 miles per hour. The normal 110 V/12 A outlet has the lowest charge time of 5 miles to 60 minutes.
Unlike other EVs Model S’ power inlet is hidden behind the rear-tail light.
Tesla is planning to setup charging stations, first in the US following in quick succession in other parts of the world.
