In April 1980, the band released their debut album, Iron Maiden. Apart from the title track, the record included impressive songs, Running Free, Transylvania, Phantom of the Opera and Sanctuary.
Following the release, the band set out on a tour of the UK, in which they opened for Kiss as well as Judas Priest.
Dennis Stratton was dismissed from the band following the Kiss’ tour, and the band eventually managed to persuade Adrian Smith to come on board in October 1980.
Iron Maiden went on to release their second studio album, Killers, in February 1981. Almost all tracks were written before their debut album, with only ‘Prodigal Son’ and ‘Murders in the Rue Morgue’ were written for the new record.
Martin Birch, who went on to work with Iron Maiden until his retirement in 1992, produced the second album, as the band was not satisfied with their debut album’s production.
Paul Di’Anno, the band’s lead vocalist, was increasingly getting used to with extreme usage of drugs that ultimately affected his performances. Following the Killers’ World Tour, the band dismissed the vocalist, and Bruce Dickinson was hired as their new lead vocalist in September 1981 after a small audition.
Dickinson hit the roads with his new band in the following month, and stunned almost everyone with his impressive performances, and his charismatic appearance on stage.
‘The Number of the Beast’ recorded Dickinson’s debut on the band’s studio album, while the third record gave the band their first ever UK albums Chart No.1 record, and went on to become a Top Ten hit in several other countries as well.
