Islamabad: (Wednesday, June 27, 2012) Pakistan Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani, in a meeting with ISAF commander General John Allen, has expressed his reservations over the border intrusion by militants from Afghanistan.
Gen Allen, in the backdrop of heightened tensions between Pakistan and American and NATO forces based in Afghanistan, is visiting Pakistan. His visit aims at clearing the misunderstandings that prevail on both sides of the border.
The United States has been accusing Pakistan of not acting against the militants based in Pakistan, and who have been involved in attacking US and NATO forces in Afghanistan. On the other side, Pakistan has similar reservations
against the US and NATO army who is not stopping the Afghan militants from crossing the border to Pakistan for terrorist activities.
The two countries are also having strife relations over still-closed NATO supply routes that were shut down after US army attacked Salala check posts and killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.
The ISAF commander’s visit also follows a similar cross-border attack by the Taliban militants who have their safe heavens in Afghanistan. The attack resulted in rendering 13 Pakistani soldiers martyred.
Sources claim that during the meeting with ISAF commander, General Kayani expressed his reservations over cross border attacks and made it clear that such incidents will not be tolerated in the future.
The sources also claim that the ISAF commander assured General Kayani that he will raise and discuss the issue with the Afghan National Army.
According to Pakistan Military sources, Gen John Allen’s visit to Pakistan was to focus on reviewing the “progress made in the implementation of recently evolved border coordination measures and standing operating procedures.”
