Dell XPS 14 (2012): Full Review – Part 1
Wednesday, June 27th, 2012 4:15:59 by Usman KhalidDell released the new mid-size ultrabook with a thin structure, beautiful body and a high-res 14-inch display in the new XPS 14. The new laptop uses the third-generation Core i-series processors and discrete graphics from NVIDIA. This has somehow become a norm in the laptop manufacturing community to couple the new processors with latest GPUs from NVIDIA.
The result is a notebook that is capable of performing professional tasks with sheer efficiency in a very portable footprint and less cost than a MacBook Pro. The new XPS 14 can be compared with the new MacBook Pro 2012 sans the Retina Display. Though the new iteration in Dell’s flagship line of laptops has a very sharp display, its wings burn compared to the Retina Display that crams more than 5 million pixels in a 15-inch screen.
However, the new notebook has a unique design that can also be associated to the MacBook Pro. The company retires from the tapered design we saw in XPS 13 ultrabook that was astonishingly similar to the MacBook Air. The new XPS 14 brings a slab-like uniform design that is more attractive and professional.
In terms of performance, the XPS 14 has Windows 7 Home Premium preinstalled that can be upgraded to the upcoming Windows 8 upon its release in Fall 2012. The keyboard is small but keys are aptly spaced and important functions like Shift, Alt, and Ctrl are satisfactorily large enough for frequent use.
Design
The new laptop has a uniform slab-like design that can be associated to the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display. Though it is quite thin, it is not as enough as the new Pro. The LCD screen is quite thing and unfold to 120 degrees with bottom edge extending to the foot-soles of the cradle.
