Dell XPS 14 (2012): Full Review – Part 2
Wednesday, June 27th, 2012 4:15:53 by Usman KhalidThe laptop comes in aluminium body that is amalgamated with magnesium alloy in the wrist rest area. The thin chassis is just about the minimum qualification for earning the Ultrabook badge from Intel.
The white-ish exterior is matched in high contrast with the black island-style keyboard that is now a regular sight in ultrabooks and mid-range laptops. However, the keys, despite the fact that they are small in size, have both good space in-between and ergonomic shape. The backlight is ample to see bet the bearings in the dark. The touch pad beneath is sans click buttons, which is also an ordinary thing in contemporary notebooks.
The touch pad is multi-touch gestures capable and brings up the functions comparatively smoothly; especially the two-finger scrolling is much more improved in the new XPS 14. However, touch sensitivity has still to beat the efficiency and effectiveness of MacBooks.
The display jams together 1,600×900 pixels, which is a welcome as the previous 1,366×768-pixel resolution was both less sharp and dull. The new screen is brighter than most of the competition in the market and is more rigorous to frames per second rate. However, the viewing angle is a disappointment. A little off-axis the user gets, the colours start to wash-out.
For a 14-inch laptop, the XPS 14 is a little heavier at 4.7 pounds. Even 4.46 pound MacBook Pro with Retina Display is not the suitable candidate to take to the office every day, the new XPS 14 is far less competitive on that front.
Hardware
The new laptop brings the latest gadgetry to the table. It has the highest configuration in processors and graphic cards. The new laptop uses Intel’s latest Ivy Bridge third-generation Core i7 CPU assisted by 8 GB of DDR3 RAM. Another big difference from last XPS models is the inclusion of latest release of graphic card from NVIDIA, GeForce GT 630M with 1GB GDDR5 VRAM to be exact.
