Supreme Court seeks PM Ashraf’s reply in NRO implementation case
Wednesday, June 27th, 2012 12:06:56 by Faisal FarooqThe Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday directed Raja Pervez Ashraf, the new prime minister of the country, to submit his written reply in the NRO (National Reconciliation Ordinance) implementation case by July 12.
A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk resumed the hearing, issuing directives to Attorney General of Pakistan Irfan Qadir to hold consultation with the premier and informed the court.
The bench asked the premier to inform the court whether or not he will write a letter to the Swiss authorities to reopen graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.
While hearing a contempt of court case against former prime minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, the bench already ordered to write a letter to the Swiss authorities, disregarding the summary made by Ministry of Law.
However, the government didn’t implement the ruling saying that Gilani’s case is still underway in the court.
On Wednesday, the bench remarked, “A prime minister is not an ordinary person and that it didn’t suit him to say that he doesn’t know about the case and hence he should ponder over it and submit a reply to the court”.
On Tuesday, a petition was filed in the apex court asking it to initiate contempt of court proceedings against Raja Pervez Ashraf for saying that he will not write a letter to Switzerland.
The bench expressed hopes that Raja Pervez Ashraf will follow the orders, saying that the previous prime minister was dismissed from his post after he didn’t comply with ruling of the court.
On March 8, 2011, the Supreme Court directed Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani to write a letter to the Swiss authorities for reopening the graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari, regardless of the advice, and submit a report on March 21.
But he refused to do so and conveyed the court to take up this matter after the final decision on the contempt of court proceedings. The court convicted him on April 26 in contempt of court case for defying the court orders and sentenced him until rising of the court.
Later, on June 19 the apex court declared Gilani as disqualified in the light of his conviction in the contempt case.
