Google’s new 7-inch tablet, Nexus 7: Hands-on Review – Part 3

As mentioned above the new Nexus is every bit a premium tablet sans the screen size. It has latest iteration of quad-core Tegra 3 processor from NVIDIA with all its goodies. The processor is supported by 1 GB of RAM that might look a norm to most of the experts out there but considering the footprint, it works aptly to handle the software.
The 7-inch screen jams a 1280×800-pixel resolution that is usual specification in 10-inch tablets. The small screen real estate makes this usual resolution look paper-like crisp. The intense screen resolution is handle by a 12-core GPU from NVIDIA. The scrolling is silky smooth and navigation through menus has no clipping, whatsoever. Zooming in and out is without any jitters.
Watching movies with resolution as high as 1080p was a satisfying experience on the small screen. The view was sharp and colours were bright and more natural, thank to the In-Plane Switching (IPS) technology used. The IPS panel also broadens the viewing angles. There are only a handful of tablets and smartphones in the market that offer such wide viewing angles.
Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
Google also announced latest iteration of its signature mobile operating system, Android. The new version to take centre-stage is the decimal upgrade to Android 4.0, released last year. The new Android 4.1 is called Jelly Bean and it makes its way to Google’s new tablet as well.
The home screen is Jelly Bean’s stock setting, as Google touted the tablet to be a stock operating system device. However, media screen is tweaked to look more like the Kindle Fire. At the bottom line are Google goodies Play, Music, Books, and Magazines.
Google Play has been updated, now to include purchasable movies, music and TV shows. Existing Android users can also purchase the Nexus 7 directly from Google Play, with a bonus of $25 to purchase media from Google Play.
