Google launches new Nexus Q media streaming device with a different shape – Part 2
Thursday, June 28th, 2012 2:25:24 by Usman KhalidThe Nexus Q is a orb-shaped device that has a chord cut at the bottom to place it on a table or book shelf. The whole device is painted in matte-black giving it a more gothic look than a media device. Google has a way to design device in the most innovative ways. Though this is the first time it is entering the OEM business, it has had a strong say in the designs of smartphones like Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
There are the required micro-HDMI, micro-USB, optical audio output and legendary Ethernet ports at the back of the ball. The inclusion of the Ethernet port is an extra benefit and does not mean that it lacks wireless connectivity.
The back of the orb is waterlogged with four audio outputs from the amp, ports in one line and a power inlet socket for A/C supply. When active, the device lights up the LEDs inside giving it a unique Saturn-like look.
Bluetooth, WiFi 802.11 b/n and near-field communications transmitter are built-in and standard. The inclusion of NFC chip is an added benefit over the likes of Apple and Roku products in the same category.
Unlike other media streaming devices the new Nexus Q comes with its own built-in processor and a gigabyte of RAM, 16 GB of internal flash memory to store media files and Android 4.0 (customized version) as its operating system.
The aforementioned software and hardware features coupled with the NFC capability set Nexus Q apart from other media streaming device in the market. The $300 price tag starts to make sense.
The device connects seamlessly to any Android device, regardless of the OS version, be it tablet or smartphone. It is directly connected to the integral peripheral, television via HDMI port. Though at first glance the streaming looks to be AirPlay (from Apple) lookalike feature but a deeper probe into the mechanics suggest that Google has taken a different approach to flow the media from internet to the smartphones and ultimately to the televisions.
