Google launches new Nexus Q media streaming device with a different shape – Part 3

In case of Apple TV, AirPlay streams audio and video content double time, first on the mobile device from where the request is instigated, then in the Apple TV that supplies it to the television via HDMI. However, inserting Nexus Q into the look demotes the smartphone/tablet to merely a controller. The user only has to initiate a request for media file and Nexus Q takes over there. It streams the media at the device directly from the web and ushers it into the home theatre.

The major throwback in the new device is the content availability. Despite the fact that Google is always at good terms with content providers, the new media-box offers only three sources to stream contents from, Google Play Music, Google Play Movies and TV Shows, and YouTube. Google Play now has a huge library of music and movies/TV shows and it is needless to mention the power of YouTube. However, the lack of Hulu Plus, HBO Go, NetFlix and Pandora is still a major fallback on Nexus Q’s part.

It is still to be seen whether the new device captures market attention in the presence of less expensive Apple TV and Roku LT and in the absence of major content providers in the package. However, the $300 price tag is well-articulated worth for an amplified streaming box.
