Jenson Button looks towards closing the points gap in future races

Jenson Button is looking to the British Grand Prix as the opportunity to start closing in on the gap of the Championship standings.

Button won the opening race of the season at the Australian Grand Prix. He was speculated to be the guy to beat in the season but since he has gradually been slipping down in the standings. The last couple of races have had poor relative results for the Brit.

Button was looking to improve on his performances at Valencia but he had to face failure once again as he was unable to explain the lack of pace in the race. After the race the Brit defended the two stop strategy used by team for his race. He said that the strategy was good it was the timing that did not work out to plan and disallowed him to move up the order.

Button’s team-mate Lewis Hamilton in contrast has shown great promise in the season unlike his previous season where he was struggling for the most part. Hamilton was leading the standing going into the European Grand Prix but was unable to increase that lead as he collided with Pastor Maldonado’s car in the penultimate lap of the race and had to retire.

Button though struggled at the midfields. Still the Brit feels that he can start to close in on the gap.

“The gap to Fernando is more points than I’ve got,” Button said. “It (the gap)’s still not a lot, though. We’ve still got 12 races … Silverstone is a high speed circuit, where our strength is. Our weakness is low speed. It’s a circuit where we should be strong.”

Button said that he will be focused on the next race at Silverstone rather than focusing on the whole season.

He said, “At least I’ve another 12 races, so although I’m a long way behind, it is still possible. But I’m not thinking about that. I’m thinking about going to my home race and driving a fast, flowing circuit which hopefully our car should work well on.”

Button will be gunning to perform in front of his home crowd at Silverstone.
