Iran looking to intervene to put an end to conflict in Syria
Friday, June 29th, 2012 4:51:34 by Taimoor TariqIran, an ally to Damascus, is looking to use its ‘good relations’ with Turkey and Syria to defuse tensions in the region
Iranian authorities feel that it is important to resolve a “very sensitive” issue following the shooting down of a Turkish jet by Syrian forces a few days back. The incident has become a source of considerable friction between Ankara and Damascus and is
the main issue of an emergency meeting of NATO which has just begun in Brussels at Turkey’s request.
“We will use our good relations with both countries to resolve this issue,” said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast.
“The destruction of a Turkish F-4 fighter by the Syrian air defence is a very sensitive issue and it concerns us.”
The spokesman is also hopeful that major players in the region would manage to prevent the incident from escalating into a crisis that will eventually involve other countries.
According to Iran, the issue needs to be resolved through negotiations and both sides should show restraint in order to avoid further disrupting the security dilemma of the region.
Russian State agency, Ria Novosti claims that the Turkish jet was testing Syrian air defence on behalf of NATO and its destruction demonstrated the effectiveness of Russian systems.
Iran is one of Syrian regime’s biggest allies. Though it officially supports humanitarian aid, but United States has accused it of supplying arms and troops to Damascus to help combat resistance.
