The newly elected Prime Minister of Pakistan Raja Pervez Ashraf has asked the leadership of Pakistan Muslim League – N to have talks in collaboration in order to appoint the new chief election commissioner for the Election Commission. PML – N has in turn
welcomed the invitation to hold talks together for the purpose.
The Prime Minister of Pakistan Raja Pervez Ashraf gave the following statements at the Governor’s House in Lahore while in a meeting with members of the PPP Punjab’s executives committee, “I invite the opposition for consultation on the appointment of the
chief election commissioner which is essential for free, fair and transparent elections.”
On the other hand, an official from the PML- N gave the following comments on the matter, “Yes, we have been contacted by the prime minister on the issue of CEC’s appointment. The party leadership welcomes the move and is open to discussion.”
After having invited the PML –N for discussions, the Prime Minister of Pakistan also stated that he does not want a clash of institutions to take place in the country and no leg pulling of any sort should prevail.
The Prime Minister of Pakistan Raja Pervez Ashraf recently came into office after his predecessor Yousuf Raza Gilani was deemed unfit to carry out the duties of being the Prime Minister of the country. The Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani had been repeatedly
asked by the Supreme Court of Pakistan to write to the Swiss probe in order to re start an investigation against the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari but Yousuf Raza Gilani had insisted that the constitution of the country protects the President of Pakistan
in the sense that no legal action can be taken against him.
The President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari’s name is in a scandal which accuses him along with his deceased wife Benazir Bhutto to be involved in a case of money laundering that the Swiss probe was investigating. However, the investigation was put to a stop
by the signing of the National Reconciliation Ordinance during the time that the President of the country was Pervez Musharraf.
