‘Seventh Son of a Seventh Son’ became Iron maiden’s second album to top UK charts. In the following tour, the band headlined ‘Monsters of Rock’ festival at Donington Park for the first time in August 1988. The English band performed in front of the largest crowd in the history of festival (107,000).
Iron Maiden released ‘The First Ten Years’ to mark the band’s ten year recording anniversary in 1990. The set included the series of ten CDs and double 12″ vinyl.
The band regrouped to work on a new studio record. During the pre-production of the album, Adrian Smith left the band due to indifferences with Steve Harris. Janick Gers, who worked on Bruce Dickinson’s solo project, was recruited to replace Smith.
In October 1990, the band released their eighth studio album, No Prayer for the Dying. The record contained ‘Bring Your Daughter… to the Slaughter’, which became the band’s first single to top UK Singles Chart.
After another tour, the band recorded their next studio album, Fear of the Dark, which hit the stores in May 1992. It was the third record of the band that achieved No. 1 spot in the UK albums chart.
‘Fear of the Dark’, which featured Gers’ writing, title track became a major hit – now a regular single in the band’s concert set-list – and also included ‘Be Quick or Dead’ and ‘Wasting Love’.
Following tour marked Iron Maiden’s second performance at Donington Park, which was filmed for the audio and video release with the name ‘Live at Donington’.
