In 1993, Bruce Dickinson left Iron Maiden to pursue his solo career while the band started to search for his replacement, listening to hundreds of tapes before luring Blaze Bayley to give an audition for them. Bayley had a totally different style, and was received with mixed reception from the fans as well as critics.
In October 1995, the band released their tenth studio album, The X Factor, which recorded their lowest chart position since 1981 in the UK. However, the record went on to win Album of the Year awards in Germany and France. ‘Sign of the Cross’, ‘Man on the Edge’ and ‘Lord of the Flies’ were the renowned singles from this album.
The band returned to studio in 1998, and went on to release their 11th album ‘Virtual XI’. The record was not received positively, and recorded the band’s lowest chart scores to date, even failing to sell over one million albums worldwide. However, there were some good singles in the record like ‘The Clansman’, ‘The Educated Fool’ and ‘Futureal’.
In January 1999, a band meeting was held where Bayley was asked to leave Iron Maiden after he failed to perform impressively during the ‘Virtual XI’ World tour.
Steve Harris, the founding member of the band, was convinced to ask Bruce Dickinson to make his return. The band held talks with talks with Dickinson, who eventually agreed to rejoin the group.
