Former IBF and WBA super world light welterweight champion Amir Khan has changed his diet, his exercises, his training and sparring strategies, in order to become a more resilient and powerful fighter.
Since the arrival of Ruben Tabares, Amir’s new fitness coach, the Bolton proud is mainly focusing on putting on lean body mass and strength. Interestingly, his weight remains the same and most probably he will successfully meet the 140-pound divisional criteria in the upcoming weigh-in for the Danny Garcia-bout.
Amir’s changed physique and training has raised questions as to whether all these efforts are in favour of the 25-year-old or not, and will they help Khan in his bout against Garcia? As far as Ruben and Freddie are concerned, they are pretty confident that Khan is impressively developing and changing into a solid fighter.
During a recent media interaction, Ruben spoke about Khan’s new training and conditioning regime. Ruben specifically mentioned he has restrained Khan from using any kind of obsolete dieting techniques. Tabares pronounced them as ‘rubbish’ and said that his new techniques have helped Khan a lot.
Ruben, who was also the strengthening coach of David ‘Hayemaker’ Haye for three years, commented that Khan’s arsenal now includes too much power and strength accompanied by more speed and agility.
Tabares stated, “I like to think that I have made a difference to Khan’s arsenal in terms of fitness, strength, and power. Even Freddie says that he is hitting and punching with great power and harder than he ever has.”
Ruben even spoke of the strategies they have introduced to strengthen Khan for his upcoming title clash.
While sharing his thoughts in a media interaction, Freddie commented that he is satisfied with Khan’s training, adding that with every passing day he can feel Ruben’s effort visible in Khan’s punches.
Roach further added that Khan has completely evolved and this time people will see a new Amir Khan, adding that he now connects punches with such power and strength that he has never ever displayed before.
The newly inducted Hall of Fame boxing trainer, Freddie, stated, “He’s looking great….he’s doing great….He knows how to beat this guy we’re just going through the final stages of the training and Khan is 100% ready for this bout.”
Ruben and Freddie’s confidence in their lad is enough to confuse Garcia junior. Freddie-Ruben duo is not a simple one. Both are considered as the best in what they do and how they do therefore, Khan is definitely becoming a danger for Danny with every passing day.
Khan’s evolution started even before the cancellation of the Lamont Peterson bout and since then one can easily witness a clear difference in Amir’s style of taking on opponents. Ruben also shared that he and Khan enter the ring for a wrestling grappling session just to make Amir’s legs strong and stiff for a scenario that Khan might face in the ring.
Such precautionary measures taken by Ruben during the training will definitely aid Khan in his engagement with Danny. Garcia and Khan will meet in a 12-round title clash on July 14, 2012 at Mandalay Bay Resorts & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States.
