Amir Khan: I’m glad that both titles will be on the line now

Former IBF and WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan held a conference call yesterday, revealing about his preparation and his views regarding his career.

Khan will be taking on Danny Garcia on July 14 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The fight was initially for Garcia’s WBC light welterweight title, but now the WBA light welterweight title is on the line as well.

“I’m glad that both titles will be on the line now,” said Khan. He added “That’ makes it more exciting. It makes the fight even bigger. Me and Danny are young fighters. He’s 24 and I’m 25. We just hope that the IBF may do the same thing and put that title on the line as well, which would help us to promote this as even more of a unification fight.”

Speaking about his loss to Peterson, Khan revealed, “I know that I made a lot of mistakes in there. At times, I took shots when I didn’t have to stand in there and take shots. But I’ve just put it behind me now. The truth is out there now. I fought someone who was on illegal substances.”

The WBA has stripped Peterson off the WBA light welterweight title. Now, the title is vacant and up for grabs when Khan meets Garcia.

“The future holds another big fight for me, which is against Danny Garcia for the WBA title and the WBC title. I’ve put everything else behind me. It’s been a long training camp, but I love training and spending time in the gym. It’s given me a lot of time to work on new things. I’ve paced myself and not overtrained. It’s going perfectly really,” said Khan.

Khan has been training for three months now. He started training in April earlier this year but since the rematch against Peterson, due on May 19, was cancelled, the Bolton proud signed on to take Danny Garcia. Khan has been training and conditioning his physique for the showdown since May.
