Amir Khan vs. Danny Garcia: Khan talks about splitting up with Alex Ariza

In a conference call yesterday, former IBF and WBA light welterweight titlist Amir Khan spoke about working with his new strength and conditioning coach Ruben Tabares. Khan revealed the problems he faced with Ariza and the changes Ruben has brought in.

Khan has been training with Hall of Famer coach Freddie Roach for the last eight fights. Similarly, Khan has spent most of his time with Alex Ariza, considered conditioning guru in the world of boxing. After Ariza left the Baguio City camp without prior permission from Khan, the former champion decided to split up with him.

“It was a change really that I needed. It’s always good to change and work on new things. It was a big wakeup call for me after the Peterson fight. This was one of the things that I had to change,” said the British-Pakistani fighter.

Khan was at the Baguio City camp along with former WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao and Freddie Roach. Ariza flew to New York to work with Julio Cesar Chavez without informing Khan and Roach. Later on, in a media interaction, Ariza revealed that he was permitted by Pacquiao to leave.

“We’ll see what happens after we win this fight, hopefully, and then we’ll sit down with the team and we’ll go through what’s going to happen. But it could be one of the last fights. It just depends on how it all goes. But it may be time to go up to the next weight category and go for the new challenges,” Khan said.

Khan was furious over Ariza’s actions and finally decided to part ways with him. Freddie Roach suggested to Pacquiao to do the same as well but the Filipino refused.

For now, Khan is satisfied with Ruben’s ways. In a public letter last week, Khan revealed Ruben’s strategy for his match against Danny Garcia, the current WBC light welterweight champion. According to Khan, Ruben is trying to work on his strength instead of just speed.
