Google/Asus Nexus 7 (2012): Full Review – Part 1
Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012 4:18:42 by Usman KhalidGoogle released its own tablet last week, the Nexus 7, in collaboration with its hardware partners AsusTek. Though the Taiwanese company has released its own Android tablets equipped with the latest gadgetry, the new Nexus 7 is a unique blend of hardware hype and inexpensive price tag.
At $199 for the 7-inch tablet, Google took a stab at the Kindle Fire market that has been booming since the launch of the device last year. Though there were a number of Android tablets in the market with 7-inch displays and small footprints before, Amazon revamped the market segment with a price of $199.
The new Nexus 7 is a new device in a lot of ways. Normally, a 7 incher is considered a low- or entry-level tablet with a number of compromises on the hardware features, albeit Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. The latter had been the top-spec tablet device in the market until Nexus 7 intruded it.
The 7-inch tablet market had been segregated into two main categories, tablets with low to normal calibrated hardware and software features with a premium price, and tablets with low hardware specifications and a dirt low price tag slapped on the forehead. What Google has done in collaboration with Asus is nestle every high-end hardware specification and the latest iteration of the Android operating system and launched it for the same Kindle Fire price.
This is definitely going to redefine the tablet market culture and will give the Amazon product a run for its money. However, the Kindle Fire has its advantages over Nexus 7, at least for now. The Amazon eco-system is still the best with the availability of content and its price, especially when the user is Premium Member.
