Google/Asus Nexus 7 (2012): Full Review – Part 5
Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012 4:18:09 by Usman KhalidThere is an NFC, Near-Field Communication, chip inside the board. That, for one, is a big hardware inclusion in a device that is worth $199. The NFC brings home the Android Beam for faster transfer of files like web pages, bookmarks, pictures and other media files. The devices of exchange have to be connected back-to-back with each other. In Nexus 7’s case, it has to be the top right corner on the back. Smaller files like web pages and bookmarks stream in an instant but media files of larger size take a little bit of time.
Google Play now offers media content on online store, in addition to apps. There are movies, songs and TV shows the user can purchase on the internet. Google Play’s content streams directly on the tablet, however, it can also be downloaded if the user decides. The download takes some time to save the file(s) on tablet, and also space that is fixed at 8 GB or 16 GB.
The screen is one of the most interesting parts of the tablet. The 7-inch real estate has a 1,280×800-pixel resolution that is not very often seen on a tablet this small. The pictures are sharp and vivid. The In-Plane Switching (IPS) technology incorporated gives wider viewing angle to the viewer, wider than any other 7 incher in the market.
Final Take
Even if the price is set aside, there are not many 7-inch devices in the market that offer a quad-core processor and a 12-core graphic-card. There are certainly thinner and lighter devices in the market but it only makes the difference of one crank opens a critical balance or a vernier calliper.
Only processing power and IPS-based screen overshadow the device’s lack of a primary camera, expandable memory and 3G capabilities.
Then comes the price of the device. There are two versions of the Nexus 7, 8 GB and 16 GB. The lower version is available for $199 and the latter is up for grabs at $250. That is not a competitive price, that is a steal if someone is interested in a tablet at all.
