Nexus Q (Google’s first media streaming box) 2012: Full Review – Part 4

Much hype has been created around the new device for the inclusion of 25-watt amplifier. However, it does not give leeway to a $300 price tag. There are certainly more expensive devices in the market with built-in amplifiers but they are more flexible on the media content as well.

The amplifier can eliminate the need for a separate A/V receiver or an external amp. It powers up the audio on book shelf speakers and other non-amplified audio outputs with good sound quality. The sound is loud but does not break or distorts. It brings the best sound quality with reasonable treble and bass that does not hurt your ears.

WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC and amp is all high-tech but a television viewer does not need all that at the cost of something that fills up the actual need, the content. Roku, to date has the largest array of online media providers and it costs $50. Apple TV, the second best option in media content asks only $100 for AirPlay and applications that range from Netflix to iTunes.

The price for the Nexus Q could have been substantially lower, let’s say $150 to $190, just because of the NFC chip and amp included. Even at that price, it would have been a hard sell because of the lack of content because at the end of the day all that matters in the streaming box is TV shows, movies and live games. The only hope is that Google will sign up with content providers near its release this month or at most the end of third quarter.
