Religious parties react to restoration of NATO supply line
Wednesday, July 4th, 2012 2:18:37 by Faisal FarooqCountry’s religious parties have reacted violently over the decision taken by Defence Committee of the Cabinet (DCC) to resume NATO supply line, saying that they will launch a movement against the decision.
On Tuesday, Pakistan announced resumption of supply routes into Afghanistan after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said sorry over the losses of Pakistan military it suffered in the Salala check-post attack.
She was the first who announced that Pakistan was resuming NATO supply-line for allied forces battling in Afghanistan. However, the country’s opposition parties, particularly the religious, are not happy over the decision.
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-F (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman was of the opinion that only the parliament has the right to take final decision in this regard. It was the parliament which took the decision for blockage of NATO supply line in the first place, he added.
The JUI-F leader also made it clear that neither President Asif Ali Zardari nor Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf had sole authority to take the final decision.
Terming the restoration of NATO supply-line against the interests of Islam and Pakistan, leaders of the Defence of Pakistan Council (DPC) said that they would not allow to doing so.
It is vital to mention here that they had threatened the government to encircle the parliament if NATO supplies resumed.
Former head of ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) General (Retd) Hamid Gul has declared the restoration of ground line of communication as a conspiracy against the country.
He was of the opinion the United States wanted to establish bases along the transit route in order to facilitate India.
The restoration of supply routes will result in the establishment of Indian supremacy in the region, he asserted.
Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Ameer Syed Munawar Hassan termed it a folly to strengthen their enemies, saying that the nation would not forgive the rulers for this heinous decision.
Senator Mushahidullah Khan of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) also spoke over the issue, saying that they would not accept the decision if the restoration of NATO supplies contradicts the parliamentary resolution.
