No permission for transportation of lethal weapons: Pakistan Foreign Office
Thursday, July 5th, 2012 7:27:45 by Fayyaz YaseenIslamabad: (Thursday, July 05, 2012) After Pakistan has ended the seven months long blockade for the NATO supplies to Afghanistan, the Foreign Office spokesperson Muazzam Khan said here today that Pakistan has not given permission
to transport lethal weapons to Afghanistan.
Khan, who was giving Foreign Office’s weekly briefings, said that the decision to reopen NATO supply was made while keeping in sight the national interest and the US had clearly apologized from Pakistan for the Salala incident.
Responding to a question about the rules and regulations under which the NATO supply line was reopened, Khan said that he will check it with the authorities and inform about the regulations. He also said that both the parties were
working for new arrangements.
According to the Chairman Federal Board of Revenue, Mumtaz Haider Rizvi, all NATO containers are being scanned in Pakistan and thus there was no chance for passage of lethal weapons to be transported across the border.
Pakistan’s Defence Committee of the Cabinet (DCC) had approved the restoration of NATO supply line on Tuesday and decided that there would be no transit fees for the facility.
However, the DCC decided that no lethal cargo will go into Afghanistan except equipment for Afghan National Security Forces, essential for ensuring peace and stability in the country.
