Chhetri signs for Sporting Lisbon
Friday, July 6th, 2012 4:47:24 by Shahrukh SohailThe Indian skipper has made the switch to Estadio Jose Alvalade and is going to play for the Lions’ B-team on a two-year deal.
As one of the brightest stars to ever emerge from India, Sunil Chhetri has spent his far share of time abroad. His extensive resume contains the likes of MLS side Kansas Wizards, while QPR snapped him up but were unable to get a work permit.
Along similar lines, a move to Portuguese powerhouse Benfica was mooted last summer but failed to materialize. However this time around, Chhetri has confirmed that the deal has gone through and that he will be plying his trade in the Portuguese Primeira
Liga.
"I feel like a 14-year-old. I’m really looking forward to it. "I just want to see how much I can achieve there. I want to take each day as it comes. There’s only one thing on my mind that I have to go and train there. We trained there for one-and-a-half
months with the national side," Chhetri said.
"Coming from a country that is ranked No. 163 in the world and going to the No. 5 nation, it’s a huge opportunity for me. My priority is to train hard and learn. It is up to the coach and the management to decide where I could fit in. I assure I won’t leave
any stone unturned. I want to make sure that when I turn 40, I don’t have to say that I could have done better. I’ll do everything that is humanly possible,” he continued.
While chances are going to be limited in Lisbon for the attacker, one can expect that he will try his best to make a mark at the helm and hopefully press for a starting-role for the first team.
