Amir Khan vs. Danny Garcia: Khan feels lucky to get the showdown

While Danny Garcia and his father Angel Garcia have been rolling off Khan as an overrated fighter, the Bolton proud feels lucky to get the showdown. Both men will face each other on July 14 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

Danny Garcia, the current WBC light welterweight titlist, will defend his belt, and the vacant WBA light welterweight belt will be on the line. Previously, Khan was scheduled for a rematch against Lamont Peterson, the current IBF light welterweight titlist. However, after Peterson tested positive for having illegal substance in his body, the fight was cancelled.

Khan was disheartened but he soon went onto sign a fight against the unbeaten American Danny Garcia.

“We were really lucky and I want to thank my promoters Golden Boy for making the fight with Danny Garcia so quickly,” said the Briton who felt dejected upon hearing the match cancellation news.

He added, “I really needed a fight before Ramadan starts [in the third week in July] otherwise it would have been over 10 months that I would have been out for – not what you want when you are a 25-year-old fighter who’s in his prime.”

Khan will take on Garcia for the WBC light welterweight title and the vacant WBA light welterweight title. The bout will be Garcia’s biggest payday to date, while it will be Khan’s last fight in the division.

Khan wanted to avenge his defeat against Peterson but it could not happen. Therefore, the former champion believes he has achieved everything at the light welterweight division and it is about time to move up.

In his previous interviews, Khan has indicated towards taking on fighters like Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto, who fight at the welterweight division. Khan believes Garcia is the last person in the division he wants to take on. Once he defeats Garcia, he will move up and face better ones.
